Yesterday I attended a wedding for the first time in probably over 10 years...maybe more. (Fun fact: that couple has long since divorced.)
​
So when I went to hunt for something to wear in my closet, I couldn't find anything that really felt right. It was either too old, too dusty, too small or too short.
​
Plus, i'll be honest, I stopped shaving my legs and armpits back in 2020 and didn't really feel like de-trolling myself for one wedding - because let's be real: armpit regrowth is itchy AF and it's kinda painful too. Was I gonna suffer all that just to have newly shorn skin for the day? That's a hard pass.
​
So I went ahead and ordered a LOT of dresses online. (Staggered over the course of a couple of weeks with each failed attempt.)
​
The rules were - find a dress that wasn't sleeveless and also long enough not to show my incandescently white legs. I looked through so many different styles of dresses. Summer maxi dresses. long cocktail jobbies, art deco, flapper girl type dresses. Oooh. That one was a definite maybe. So pretty. But too short. Too sparkly. Too armpit revealing. 🤣

Half of the dresses that arrived were too big or small. Out of the ones that technically fit, most didn't look good. They bulged in all the wrong places and highlighted all the things you would want concealed.
​
Finally, I settled on a cute, long tropical off the shoulder number. Done. At 5 am that morning with 10 hours to spare before the wedding. You'd have thunk I was the bride for all the effort. 😂
​
Then a few hours later, the temperatures dropped and wearing that bare shouldered dress wasn't gonna fly. I had to pivot.
​
So I ended up opting for a backup dress I was planning on returning because it was slightly bigger than I was hoping for and it was giving tent vibes. But it had long sleeves and a cute print and I could wear it with boots (which I could pair with tights and socks - comfy/warm) and it made for a nice boho look.
​
But since it was cold, I now needed a jacket. When was the last time I wore a wedding appropriate jacket? I had to resort to looking for all the cool leather jackets I used to buy when I worked as a television producer for Fashion File and Fashion Television. (If you're Canadian you may remember the hosts: Tim Blanks and Jeanne Beker. Both icons.)

After trying on about 10 different jackets - all which are now all too small - I finally found one I don't even remember buying. A purple leather jacket. I know I must have worn it before as I found a kleenex in the pocket. (Unused I hope.) 😜

Including the wardrobe pivot, I managed to get it all done including hair and makeup in under 40 minutes. (That's with my husband badgering me with the timer countdown which really slows me down!)
​
So here's what I learned. I overthought this wedding dress thing WAY too hard. I overplanned, overbought and didn't need most them. The two that I liked (flapper dress and sundress) which weren't suitable for the wedding I'll keep for something else.
​
But looking back, I could have actually just picked something from my closet and that would have been fine.
​
This made me think of how we conduct business. How many times do we spend wayyyy too long planning, overthinking and overbuying courses, templates and extra junk which we never use?
​
I had everything I needed. The end result was nice and I ended up looking better than Jodie Foster in the film Nell, but it wasn't worth all the effort I put into it. Instead, I could have just chosen something from the zillion things I already own.

However, everything in that closet is old. It doesn't really work for the me I am today - so it was nice to get some new things. And it made me feel good.

So yes, maybe next time, I'll skip on over-buying like I'm preparing for a Dress Apocalypse and go to a real, live, brick and mortar store and actually TRY things on instead of overcomplicating the issue by buying a zillion things which I now have to return. (Oof. Not looking forward to how confusing that will be - especially because I thought I was being smart and bought a few of the same dress I thought were winners in different sizes.) 😁
